User Reviews about TomTom XXL 540S 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)
i was going to new england where i am from (45 years ago) and took my mom and did not want to get lost -- we did one time and tomtom helped us get back on the road. -- my not getting lost -- a miracle that it can really work
This 540-S works virtually the same as my older Tom-Tom One 3rd Edition.
The larger screen is nicer but there are a few disappointments:
1. The text to voice feature seems to work only when it wants to.
2. It doesn't seem to be able to tell East from West. Example; While traveling, it will tell me to take U.S. 20 Eastbound, when in fact it is showing me graphically to turn on to the Westbound lane as it should. Then while traveling on U.S. 20 in the westbound lane, it will show on the screen the road as being U.S. 20 Eastbound. The actual route is correct, I am traveling from the North East to the South West and the left and right turns are correct, it just identifies the East and West incorrectly. North and South are fine.
3. The compass feature also displays east and west backwards. While traveling north, the compass points up as it should and south as down as you would expect. However, when traveling east, the compass points to the left and while traveling west it will point to the right. I had complained to Technical Support about this very same issue with my Tom-Tom One 3rd addition after an upgrade it went from displaying direction correctly to this backwards mode. They just blew me off and said there would be no further modifications to this model. Now it seems that the same operating system runs on other models with only slight modifications.
4. I find it interesting that the Tom-Tom One 3rd Edition and this new Tom-Tom 540s will come up with different routes for even the simplest trips.
I will try getting Technical Support to take an interest in the East/West confusion issue and will issue and update to this if possible. This seems like a relatively simple fix to me. Perhaps I am the only one who has elected to display the compass on the screen? The funny thing is, the direction display in degrees is right on the money. -- Please Fix The Compass Feature!!!
This GPS gave me more feature for the money I paid, comparitively. Initially I worried to buy refurbished, but I dont see any problems on this unit (running fine for 1months).
Cool features I noticed:
1. It has advanced lane guidance, which will tell you in which lane you have be in.
2. It has wide screen.
3. Automatically zoom in and zoom out, acoording to the need. Example: when you need to turn it will zoom in, when you are in freeways it zooms out...etc.
Few things which I am uncomfortable with:
1. It doesn;t have live battery indicator. Battery indicator will come only if its too low... (< 10%). Once indicator comes in you have to plug it wihtin 5mins.
Overall, its a great buy for the money. 5 Stars -- Nice Features! Great Buy!
