User Reviews about TomTom ONE 140-S 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Let me start by saying I did exhaustive research prior to purchasing a GPS unit. I was convinced I was getting a Garmin 765,1370, or 1390 ( I also considered the Magellan 1470 and 4700). But they were all way more money than I wanted to spend- along comes this deal at less than half the price!~. I decided that features that were important to me were in order of importance:
Text to Speech - spoken street names
Lane Guidance -
Junction view
Blue tooth -
Lifetime free traffic
I live in a smaller metro area and so traffic was an easy perk to say good bye to, I only use my cell phone for emergency communication so bluetooth was an easy perk to say good bye to. That left me with 3 features that I knew at least 2 would be covered by the 140s. To my surprise on the test run of the unit I found that it has the equivalent of junction view not listed in the feature set (maybe that's what they mean by "advanced lane guidance").
Disadvantages-I've read dozens of reviews of this unit and the biggest disadvantage is the small internal storage size. But I've worked with computers that don't have HUGE drives and it's something you have to manage/work with. Updates require open space on the internal drive and if you download more than it will hold apparently it bricks the unit. So piece of advice - Back up the device then delete unwanted voices. To do this you'll connect the TOMTOM to your pc and go to "manage my one". Once that's done you should have about 200 MB free space. Download and install updates. Then to update your map using the "latest map garuntee" you'll want to do a calculation and make sure that you have enough space for the newest map. Go to 'Tools' drop down and click 'use latest map garuntee' and this will take you to the map update page. The update wizard will tell you the size of the new map available for download (you may have to click 'more info') DO NOT download and install yet. Click cancel or back and go back to manage my ONE. Verify in 'manage my ONE' that if you delete the map on your unit (same procedure as before) this will free up enough TOTAL space for the newest map. If so then delete your current map (about 1600MB the new map is about 1700MB)and proceed with the download and install of the new map. This whole process took about 5 hours so I just started it before I went to bed. Now that the unit is all up to date I think I'll back it up again so I've got a fresh place to restore to.
-- Sweet Spot of value and features!
I had a "720" which was given to me as a gift. It worked great, but had many useless features, in my opinion, unrelated to navigation. I wanted a unit that had the voice directions like the "720" , and this one has it with less frills;perfect. The problem I had was attempting to register the product and updating the unit at TOMTOM Home. The MAC I have has the latest OS, and there are issues when performing the updates. Constant error messages. I called customer service about three times. They would propose a solution, and I tried them, but they didn't work. I was about to return the unit, when i decided to patiently go through the troubleshooting guidance on their website. I tried various suggestions, but they didn't work. Then I modified a file relocation suggestion and it worked. So I kept the unit. I do a good deal of travel on my job which takes me to many of the major cities out east, and this and the 720 I had, are/were a salvation.Getting out of Logan AP and getting on the freeway you want, can be a real chore in heavy traffic, and the TOM TOM works perfectly. In New Jersey, on the Turnpike it's advance directions gives you ample time to make the move when you need to merge on to another portion of the turnpike without much distance between the exit and the entrance. Finally, some folks complain the the menu/interface on the TOMTOM is be confusing. I think it's detail enhances its use. If you make an effort to familiarize with how the interface works, there shouldn't be an issue. -- Good . But TOMTOM Home Issues
I decided to get a GPS this week, and bought the 140-s. It took me awhile to figure out how to make the suction disk stick to the windshield until I realized that twisting the ring behind the disk is what makes it clamp to the windshield ( should have looked at the directions better )....
The unit is pretty intuitive to operate. I like the adjustable volume on the speech, since my hearing is not the greatest. At 100% it was really too loud. The maps, menus, and routing all seem to work well. I found that it was not necessary to detach the suction cup mount when taking the GPS unit out of the car, since it would easily snap out of the mount. I installed the software on my PC and it quickly updated all the necessary files. I had to go to another menu to make sure that I had the latest map, which I did not. It took about 2 1/2 hours to download on a DSL line, so this would be a problem with a dial-up connection. It then automatically installed the new map in the unit. I first deleted all the non-english voices on using the software tool, so that I would not have the problem of not enough memory that some people have had trying to install the updated map. I wish they would have a map of just the US as an update, since I never travel to either Canada or Mexico anymore, and that takes up alot of memory in the unit.
The display is pretty good, but a tad cramped for the touch keyboard which makes typing in information, error prone. I still like the size of the unit, so this is not a big deal for me. I like the idea of being able to make corrections on the map and to download the corrections that other people make from the website.
I debated on getting the map update service for $50+ a year, and decided to hold off on that since most of my driving is fairly close to where I live. If I start running into problem, I may sign up for it, but 2 years of updates would be the cost of a brand new unit. I think they would sell alot more updates if they would have the updates at possibly once or twice a year for less money.
I called their customer service line this morning with a question on the mounting, and the rep was very helpful and friendly, and answered my question promptly. -- Good GPS for the price
I bought this one because it was the only GPS model containing coverage in Mexico. Granted it is not as detailed south of the border but very decent coverage of major highways all the way to Guadalajara! -- Excellent Features for the price!
