User Reviews about Magellan RoadMate 1700 7-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
IPURCHASED A MAGELLAN ROADMATE 1700 7INCH SCREEN IT ARRIVED IN APPROXIMATELY (7) DAYS AND VERRY GOOD PACKAGED CONDITION (NO DAMAGE TO THE PACKAGE OR THE GPS) all OF THE ELECTRICAL HARNESSES WERE ALL IN THEIR CARTONS AND
ALL INSTELLATION MANUALS AND THE OPERATION MANUAL ALONG WITH THE GPS STORAGE BAG.I AM VERY SATISFIED WITH THIS
TRANSACTION I GIVE AMAZON 6 STARS. -- VERRY EFFICIENT & TIMELY DELIVERY
Read user manuel, installed, completed setting, took out for a test all within 70 minutes. Exceeded my exspectations. -- Love it !
I wanted a GPS, not a MP3 player or a photo viewer... just good ol get me where I want to be. This is my first GPS. I stuck it in the window and within 10 minutes out of the box was on my way... EASY to use!
I love being able to see the names of streets around me, as well as where some of them go, (cul-de-sac, dead ends etc). I also love the fact that if I veer off course it will readjust itself and keep going. (GREAT for running around traffic or accidents). I was very happy to see newer roads already on this system. This GPS will also show you the turn arounds between opposing bound lanes on freeways (sometimes reserved for emergency traffic only).
Simply put, if you have the room for a 7" screen this GPS is the one. I own a full size pickup and it fit very nicely without losing any visibility. I love the fact that the large display allows me to keep my eyes on the road.
I will come back and update once I have had a chance to check out all the extras... Points of interest, etc.. As of right now it has done an amazing job and fulfilled my every want and need for a GPS. -- Perfect no frills GPS.. Get where you need to be
Greetings,
I'm a painting contractor and use my GPS everyday, so much so that I have three of them in my truck (a Magellan maestro 4150 and a tablet PC wih MS Streets).
Positives - The huge screen is absolutely wonderful for my 44 year old eyes. Its GREAT to be able to see all of the smaller side streets while at the same time not being zoomed in so far that you can't see your upcoming turn. The large and readable street names are helpful!
Negatives - Now that I've used this for over a month there are definitely some weaknesses. Magellan could have used the large screen to give you more info (direction, eta, speed, current time, etc..) Instead this thing reminds me of one of those remote controls that's a foot long with 10 buttons on it. Big and simple like a crayon. The font size is not adjustable and there is a lot of wasted space. When you see one in person you will see what I mean about ALOT of wasted space.
Another drawback is the street name showing across the top of the screen when the map is on. It has a semi-transparent background, thus you see the street name and through the letters you see the map. Imagine reading this review if I had a street map for the background. But this is only across the top where they are showing the current street name so I can live with it.
Lack of 3d perspective view. Unless I'm mistaken I've yet to find a way to put it into perspective view. It defaults to birds eye. I didn't realize how much better perspective was until I couldn't have it. (Some people who have not used other GPS's might not even notice). When your constantly driving through neighborhoods its fairly noticeable.
Feature "Auto zoom on turn" - is a good idea, but should have some adjustability. For me it zooms in too far and then stays in tighter than I'd like it too.
Feature "highway lane assist" - I still havn't got used to the way it shows which lane you are supposed to be in. Both arrow signs it shows are green with one being darker than the other and in the heat of the moment I don't remember if I'm supposed to be following the darker green arrow or the lighter green one. (the one to follow should be flashing or something)
One positive feature - the huge screen - does take some getting used to if you have been using smaller units. This display is so big that I've missed turns thinking I still had further to drive. My problem, not the units, it just takes some getting used to.
Keying in an address is also tiresome for someone who uses the GPS all the time. It always requires you to start to spell the city you are going to. There should be a default key for you destination (If you always drive in Phoenix, you shouldn't have to key this in over and over hundreds of time a year).
The keys on the screen are also not very sensitive. I sometimes have to hold my finger on them for two or three seconds for it to notice I am trying to key in a letter. Not a big deal for weekend warrior GPS'ers but for everyday repeated use it gets old.
As other reviews mention, this thing is huge and the suction cup on the window will not hold it in the air for any length of time. Mine is stuck to the window and also sitting on the dash. Mounted this way its rock stable.
I've also been bit a couple of times by the "loop error". I'll be driving down the road and it will tell me to turn. Then it has me turn and turn back onto my route - thereby completely wasting a few minutes of drive time. I noticed the maestro 4150 also now does this since I updated the firmware online.
Conclusion, For an RV'er, regular and light gps user using GPS occasionally this unit will probably really please you. If your a delivery driver or cab driver it has some strong positives and at the same time the above negatives will start to get on your nerves. I haven't seen a unit this size which I think will do a better job so I'll live with it until one comes along. In other words I recommend it until something better comes out.
Improvements for future units: 1) Control of font size 2) Default city button 3) More information showing on status bar - speed, direction, ETA, Time remaining (now you only get one) 3) Adjustable key sensitivity 4) Highway assist color options 5) perspective view for map 6) No text display with graphics underneath it showing through 7) Auto Zoom to Turn sensitivity adjustment 8) Preprogrammed user classes for different types of drivers (Huge font, minimum info vs smaller fonts and lots of info)
I think most people will probably be pleased with this unit and would recommend it so long as you know its weaknesses.
Magellan if your reading this I'd love to beta test an updated unit for you. I have a big ad for painting in the Tucson yellow pages and my company starts with A. -- Pretty Good Unit - some flaws
NAVIGATION SYSTEM WAS EVERYTHING AND MORE THAN WHAT I EXPECTED. EASY TO USE AND ACCURATE -- MAGELLAN NAVIGATOR
