User Reviews about Magellan RoadMate 1440 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)
Spent a lot of time researching and shopping and picked this unit for two main reasons. First because it was cheap enough that if i didn't like it, i wouldn't feel overly burned. Second was from all of the reviews i read on different GPS units, the 1440 was rated consistently high as far as time it takes to get a signal, and the signal strength, which is the entire point of having a GPS unit. If it doesn't get a signal easy and doesn't keep it well, none of the rest of the features matter. I was strongly considering the Garmin 260, but a major gripe of that unit from many people was that it can take up to 5 mins to get a signal. Nuts to that. Having used the 1440 for 3 weeks now i feel very good about my decision. It starts up and has a signal within 30 seconds. The only time i've lost a signal is going through tunnels. And the price was about as good as it gets.
Pros:
-Signal acquisition time and strength are both very reliable.
-Text to speech is extremely helpful
-Don't let "refurbished" scare you off. It looks and acts brand new and has all the accessories the retail version does.
-Comes with outdated map, but you can update for free within first 30 days. Instructions:
1.) register unit on magellan's website.
2.) Download free update software from the website
3.) Hook up GPS to computer with included cable. Software updater will give you two options with check boxes next to them. One will be to update the GPS's firmware and will say "free" next to it. the other will be to update the maps and will say "buy" next to it. only click to update the firmware and let it do it's thing.
4.) Call their tech support 800.707.9971(friendly, knowledgeable, and no wait time) and tell them you want new map update for free.
5.) email proof of purchase (i used invoice from amazon) to magellan_pop@cs.magellangps.com
6.) day later you get a confirmation email telling you to use the update software again.
7.) hook it back up to your computer and run the update software again.
8.) this time the option next to update maps will say "free" instead of "buy."
9.) Click it and let it do it's thing and you are good to go
Cons:
- I don't like the robotic text to speech voice
- Not crazy about color scheme, although with text to speech you don't really need to look at the screen as much
- Points of interest library isn't very comprehensive.
-- Has some minor annoyances, but so do all the rest
This is my first GPS device so I don't have any basis to compare this unit against any other unit. However, I am totally satisfied. The unit works well, screen is large, user interface is intuitive and easy to use. Has lots of good POI data (with phone numbers of restaurants and places) and routing is great. Lots of options for your preferred route - avoid toll roads, short distance, short time etc. Again, a great product.
Initially, I had some trouble with the unit and that was due to the software issue. Once I upgraded this software, it worked well. Canadian maps are pretty much accurate. Sometime, the unit struggles with re-routing if you miss the exit, but not that bad.
Once feature I couldn't find is to specify grographical coordiates of the destination. You know, many wineries does not have street address. They suggest to use geographical coordinates. This unit does not offer that feature. Other than, this unit is a great buy.
If you travel a lot, GPS makes your life very easy !!!
-- Magellan RoadMate - good buy
The unit works very well overall. I would never know it's a refurb because it is in excellent physical condition. The one problem with the unit is that it takes a long time (2 minutes or so) to get a signal. Once that signal is acquired however, it is very accurate. The highway lane feature is really cool when going through multi-interstate interchanges. The pre-loaded POIs are pretty good and I installed the AAA feature which is also a big plus for AAA subscribers. -- Pretty good overall
This is such a good product! Perfect! I love how this GPS doesn't say "calculating route". My old one used to do that and it made me want to throw it out the window! This GPS is amazing, I love the graphics!!!! -- Very happy!
