User Reviews about Magellan Maestro 4700 4.7-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Have had a few GPS Devices. This one is simple with a good price point. Easy to use and reliable. Did not use Traffic with the unit. Basic features , turns announced well in advance, maps easy to read. Good product. Like the Bluetooth connection to the phone. One small bug is that it is difficult to change back to handset in middle of a call. -- Thank Goodness for GPS
Magellan Maestro 4700 4.7-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Overall I would definitely recommend this product. It is very simple to use with clear voice and instructions, and love the city & street default selection. I am having a problem with the Bluetooth phone connection however, and find I can only get it to find my phone intermittently. There seems to be some kind of timing trick to connecting and would love any advice?? My phone (LG VU CU-920) does not allow the address book transfers but I can do it manually. It gives plenty of time before the direction and I love the little bell that rings just before a turn and all in all am very happy with it. -- Simple & easy to use
This is the third Magellan GPS that I have purchased for personal use, and with each new model I buy I like them more and more. I have bought several GPS units over the past several years and I still like Magellan the best. I am responsible for the maintenance of our fleet of company vehicles and I have purchased just about every model of the leading manufacturers units. Although none of the leading companies put out a "perfect" product, I believe Magellan to be the best.
After extensive use of Garmin, Tom Tom, and other non name brand units, I have found that the Magellan was the most acurate. I've personally tested all of the models that I've purchased, trying different destinations that I have already been to. The Garmin seemed to take me on the least direct route. Tom Tom was worse. The Tom Tom also was not acurate in regards to the surrounding area. If you went over a bridge that spanned a body of water, or if you were near a lake or the ocean, The screen was white, not blue to indicate where the water was.
Now on to specific features of this unit. One of the most annoying things to me was when you missed a turn or deviated from a familiar route that was not part of the plotted route, the unit would say "recalculating". After several times of making course corretions, and constantly hearing "recalulating" every time, I was ready to take the GPS off the windshield and throw it out the window! This model simply makes the route correction on the map screen and remains quiet. The new course is plotted and you are on your way.
The new software in this unit displays an icon on screen when you are close to a gas station or restaurant. If you need to stop, simply press the icon and you are given options to get fuel, food or both. After your stop and you are ready to go on your way again it will ask you if you want to continue to your destination. Simple as that! If you don't have the traffic monitoring accessory, there is also an icon that will indicate areas that normally have congestion and give you options for alternative routes. I was considering getting the real time traffic accessory, but decided against it due to the poor reviews that it had.
By far, my most favorite feature of this unit is the "lane assist" feature. Many times, epecially when I was in southern California, I always seemed to be in the wrong lane to exit or move to another highway. I ended up having to back track at the expense of having to hear "recalculating route" again and again! The lane assist feature solves that problem. It tells you in advance what lane you should be in to make your turn. No more trying to cross several lanes of traffic with less than a quarter of a mile to execute your maneuver!
Probably the only negative I have is that the bluetooth feature is basically useless. I have 2 cell phones. One for work and one for personal use. It did not "pair" with my personal phone but it did with my work one. When it worked, which was rare, you could hear the party you were talking to ok, but you would almost have to bring your voice up to a level close to screaming before you could be heard to the person you were talking to. I drive a car that is pretty quiet at higway speeds so road noise should not be a factor. So, I continue to use my earpiece when using my cellphones.
There are many other features that are included with this unit to make it an excellent choice (Points of interest, easy spell, etc.). I would highly recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a good quality GPS.
-- Magellan is still the best in GPS
Fourth time is the charm: After trying 3 other models in less than 6 months, I'm glad to own the Maestro. I'm particularly enthusiastic about on/off notification feature for upcoming turns ahead -- it's really helpful when you don't know where you are. Along with the traffic link, this GPS is the best in class in my book.
My first GPS was the Garmin nüvi 265W. I bought it for a trip out west to Lake Tahoe, CA. After picking up my rental car at the airport I punched in the name and address of my hotel, Garmin kept routing me through business sections and ended up at a deadend trying to get on the highway! By the end of the trip I was ready to throw it out the window. After visiting a park one day I punched in the current location coordinates so I could return later for another hike. Garmin never found it later! Fortunately following my nose I found it again on my own, but Garmin never did. I searched on Radio Shack and it never found the local store that had been there for several years, only found one 20+ miles away! After trying a Tom-Tom (touch screen shattered the first month) and then another Garmin model 885T which kept getting me lost on business trips in New Jersey -- I almost really did throw it out the window! I finally purchased the Magellan Maestro which I'm very happy with -- has great features, accurate, dependable -- that's all I ask of a GPS! -- Good features, dependable, easy operation
Love the ease of use on the unit, simple learn and operate. I travel with 2 Garmin owners who were blown away with the performance of the 4700 on a recent trip to Colorado. They love the graphics, how fast it loaded up and how accurate it is. The also loved the way the 4700 would change the route without the "recaculating" Garmin voice. I just returned for a project run in the Kansas City area on both sides of the state line and the 4700 was quick and accurate for every location I needed to be. For the price, you can not beat the performance of this unit. -- bfromtheillside
